We've rounded up the best MagSafe and MagSafe-compatible chargers, from the simplest to the most multifunctional, including the most original. This comparison includes 13 to date.
Apple's MagSafe technology is a more efficient way to wirelessly charge compatible iPhones.
MagSafe uses a ring of magnets built into the back of the iPhone 12 and 13, it detects compatible accessories that have magnets and magnetically snaps into place. It thus creates a solid connection. MagSafe charging can be twice as fast as standard Qi wireless charging for several reasons.
First, it's compatible with the iPhone at 15W, compared to the usual 7.5W of a Qi charger; note however that this power is 12W for the iPhone 12/13 mini.
Standard non-MagSafe magnetic chargers, also known as MagSafe compatible wireless chargers, are limited to 7.5W.
In our testing, MagSafe speeds slowed to less than 10W once the iPhone was at 50%.
That's still faster than compatible chargers, but the speed advantage of MagSafe certification isn't as obvious as the sheer numbers suggest.
Second, the connection is much more precise than what you get by simply placing your phone on a non-magnetic wireless charging pad. Wireless charging is inefficient and can lose up to 50% of its power due to poor placement and a handful of environmental factors. With the optimal positioning of MagSafe, this wireless inefficiency is more like 30% compared to wired Lightning charging.
And you're less likely to wake up to find your phone wasn't placed correctly and didn't charge at all!
These things to keep in mind before buying a MagSafe chargerWhile you can buy any MagSafe charger to give your iPhone 13 or iPhone 12 a wireless experience, there are a few key points that might influence your purchase decision. Keep these things in mind before buying a MagSafe wireless charger:
1. Difference Between MagSafe and Magnetic ChargersApple's MagSafe technology was introduced with the iPhone 12 series last year. Similar to its name, MagSafe relies on snap-on magnets to let you attach chargers to the back of your iPhone and transfer power wirelessly. All official MagSafe products created or endorsed by Apple carry a “ Made for MagSafe ” label, which you should look for. This means that these official products will be able to charge your iPhone 12 or later with up to 15 watts of power.
However, besides Apple-approved products, there are several third-party charging products that use magnetic technology to charge your iPhone. But remember that these products will only be able to charge your iPhone at up to 7.5W or 10W maximum. However, on the plus side, these third-party MagSafe chargers are more often than not more affordable than their counterparts. We've listed a healthy variety of MagSafe vs Magnetic chargers below, so feel free to take your pick.
2. You need an iPhone 12 or later for true MagSafe support
Although all of the products below support magnetic charging, you need an iPhone 12 or later to get the true MagSafe experience. This is because models below the iPhone 12 do not contain the magnetic ring required to snap chargers or accessories onto your iPhone. However, iPhone 8 or later users can still use these products and charge their devices wirelessly.
3. You will need a fast-charging power adapter
Since the best MagSafe chargers incorporate fast-charging technology, you'll need a fast-charging adapter with more than 18W of power. Depending on the product you choose below, some will come with or without an AC adapter. So if you find yourself without one, buy a compatible fast-charging adapter.
4. Not all iPhone cases support MagSafe
As noted above, MagSafe chargers rely on magnets to attach and charge your iPhone. If you have an iPhone case that doesn't support MagSafe and is really thick, chances are your iPhone won't be able to charge. However, fret not as these best iPhone 13 cases and covers support MagSafe. Do you have an iPhone 13 Pro instead? We've also listed the best iPhone 13 Pro cases and covers that you can pair with your MagSafe charger.
