You've got mail!

in mail •  5 years ago

Making some coffee today and checking the usual Steem related stuff I check first thing in the morning my roommate sends me a text saying I've got mail. This is strange as I don't usually get mail and if I do it's something unimportant that doesn't need to be mentioned by the roommate. He tells me where it is so I go and check to see a package with that creepy Amazon smile on it, now I'm like wtf I haven't ordered shit.

Turns out, a Steemian had gone behind my back for weeks to my roommate about buying me a gift! How dare they surprise me with something I've been mentioning I lack! This is ridiculous! Jokes aside I had no idea when opening the package what it was, I asked my roommate if he's the one that has ordered something and he just goes "nope", then I'm like okay I'm too curious to continue asking questions so I open it up and am surprised by some drawing and painting materials that I feel really unqualified for! :O

My roommate let's me know who was behind this surprise and I go onto discord to spam them, I think one of my messages was "it feels like someone bought me a new Lambo but I don't know how to drive". I am super thankful for the gift, though, seems like it came at a good timing as well as I was letting the gaming nerd in me get the best of me with the Gods Unchained hype lately so this will be a good time to go back to drawing and failing at making anything look good as I have no experience in waterbased colors. It's going to be fun to try though and I hope the Steemian is prepared that my first works are going to look like a person with Parkinson's was attempting to draw while on a spaceship during launch. Anyway, thank you so much for the amazing gift, the thought behind it and the effort to surprise me with it, must have not been easy keeping it a secret since we talk daily. :P

Now the reason I wanted to post about this is to ask my followers and artists who may have a lot more experience of some starter advice, mainly what I should attempt to draw, some good references or ideas you may have. I personally enjoy drawing anime the most and putting use to the fineliners as well and coloring is something I have never done before really so that's gonna be a fun trial and error experience. Thinking I may take a pic of everything before I attempt coloring them but my phone has a cracked camera screen right now so I have to keep bugging my roommate about taking pics thus the lack of progression pics on my previous drawing posts.

Anyway, give me your opinions!

I may have an idea for something #newsteem related that I may give a go but will gladly take some more suggestions in the meantime!

Woah those art materials!! :O
I wish I have them T_T I'm jealouz
What a cool Steemian, whoever that was :p and the roommate was also really cool to participate in such "secret" ha. You lucky

<3 :3

Anime/manga seems to be as good as anything else. The lines will shape it up, that's the important. Work each field with one colour and thin it where you want highlights, then go over it with a darker version of the same colour in the shadows.

A bit like Michelangelo does in this painting:

Another effective approach is to limit the colours to one or two colours + black for the shadows. It normally gives a cool look and is easier to control.

Like William Blake:

My advice first - Get good! Lol

Cool gift and I will try to snag a few online resources that may help as far as technique etc and post here later.

On a philosophical note...draw fast and don’t think about how good it is just go, don’t overthink it or worry just get it down on paper. You will look after and notice things you will change in next one. It cost me a lot of time foolishly chasing after “perfection”

I would definitely sketch a lot of squares and basic shapes in perspective...I still sketch squares circles etc.

if I recall from some past drawings you were already under way. Draw draw draw!

I overthink a lot that's why my paintings always end up in a disaster, or at least not the way I expected when I was studying and planning it for days. Surprisingly, when I do alla prima or just random paintings, it always turns out good. So yeah, follow this advice @acidyo :P

that was nice of them! what a happy surprise that'd be👍👍

What a nice surprise, that's awesome! :D

aaahh what a nice present ! fine materials, I know you will make the best from that.. ^^
and also it makes me want to draw again ! :))

I would advise to practice on simple sketchs of usuals objects, nice for volumes and perspectives !

I will look forward your future productions !

Hello there!
Just to let you know I added you as a beneficiary and left you a thank you note on my last post.

See you there?

Cheers

That is awesome, but you have to change your roommate as you now know that they can't be trusted. =)

Do a self portrait.

What a cool gift!
I use Sakura Micron sometimes for drawing pattern art but I have failed many times drawing anime characters XD
Making some copies of my sketches by tracing before lineart and/or colouring usually helps me with swearing too much haha
If you have a light box that’ll be helpful but I do against the window when it’s bright outside.
I’m looking forward to seeing your drawing soon!

What a good gift, that friend of yours more than a lambo is challenging you to do something different.

You can start with your anime idea with watercolor strokes.

I've seen your past drawings and you have talent to draw anime.

Thanks for sharing.
