Turmeric; an orange colored cousin of ginger is making a huge stir in the health arena these days, what's it all about?

Turmeric, called Haridra in Tamil is an ancient plant medicine of India.

Many Westerners know of its anti-inflammatory uses today, but Turmeric has so many other uses that I call it The Repairer.

Why I call Turmeric the Repairer is that it appears to be able to repair damage in the body and rectify a number of disease conditions including:

• Curcumin (one of the active compounds), can correct the most common expression of the genetic defect that is responsible for cystic fibrosis, suggests an animal study published in the Science (April 2004).

• Increases Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to enhance nerve growth in the frontal cortex, (Brain Tonic). So together with its antioxidant properties its great for protecting the brain from degeneration and wear and tear!

• Possible prevention of Alzheimers disease by inhibiting amyloid-B aggregation.

• Lowering Cholesterol: Research reveals curcumin communicates with genes in liver cells, directing them to increase the production of receptors for LDL (bad) cholesterol. With more LDL-receptors, liver cells are able to clear more LDL-cholesterol from the body.

• Curcumin has anti inflammatory actions useful for Irritable Bowel syndrome and has anti-cancer properties as well as increasing bile secretion…

Turmeric is easy to grow and loves to be grown between other plants-in a micro-environment, being a tropical forest plant.

It keeps fresh in the soil-because it starts growing! So rather keep it in the soil rather than in the fridge where it will degrade!

From personal experience another great use of Turmeric is to prevent any stomach bug that starts-diarrhea-food infection etc, just chew a one inch piece of turmeric and it kills pathogens and settles the digestive system quickly. A truly diverse healing plant!

Ps: You can increase Turmeric’s healing action by mixing it with black pepper in drinks using milk and other spices such as cardamom. “Golden Milk”

Tumeric is one of my favourites! Next to ginger and thyme I use it a lot to lower cholesterol, but also as a preventative measure against cancer. It also helps me to fall asleep in combination with cinnamon, honey and a splash of boiling water every evening :)

Update: here's the recipe of the Sleepy Milky Golden Tea

1 ts of curcuma powder (or a thumbsize of fresh curcuma, peeled and shredded)
1 thumbsize of ginger, peeled and shredded
1 tbs of coconut oil
freshly ground black pepper
2 cups of coconut milk¹
1 ts of honey (optional)
½ ts of cinnamon (optional)
¹ you can use other sorts of milk if you prefer.

Add all the ingredients to a pot and heat the mixture for about 5 minutes. Happy days and sleepy nights!

In een pan, meng alle ingrediënten en verwarm het mengsel gedurende 5 minuten. Dat is alles!

Hey hatsikidee I didnt know about its sleep properties but yes it has antidepressant affects so that makes sense. :D Better than nutmeg with its toxic properties (high doses) :D

True, although nothing beats a little nutmeg added to your buttersoft potato/parsnip mash :)
