Makeover Monday - Songs You May Not Know Were Covers Pt. 1

in makeovermonday •  6 years ago  (edited)
This list may surprise you. I am going to take hits that you thought may have been originals but were indeed cover songs made famous. Some were chart toppers, while some are just well know but did really well on the charts, but may not have made it to the that number one position. Whether you've heard these songs and thought to yourself, "this song sounds familiar", and then found out that it's a cover, chances are, it may be a cover of a cover. It's not that uncommon and you will see an example of that on today's list. Many artists will do their own renditions of songs for one reason or another. It could be to be to pay tribute to a band or because they like the song so much that they want to do their own spin on it. Whatever the case may be, they did so well enough to make their mark on the music charts in one way or another. So, let's get started, shall we?

1.I Love Rock 'n' Roll by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. This was released in 1982 and has more famously been covered by Britney Spears. However, did you know that Joan Jett & The Blackhearts covered this song? It was originally done by The Arrows in 1975.

2.Dream A Little Dream of Me by The Mamas & The Papas. This was released in 1968 and thought to be the original song that so many artists have covered. However, the original dates back to 1931 and was originally performed by a man named Ozzie Nelson.

3.Without You by Mariah Carey. Back in 1994, this became a small hit for one Ms. Mariah Carey, before her Diva-like years. Love her or hate her, you can't dismiss her amazing vocal range. Many people believe that the original version was performed by Harry Nilsson from 1971 when in fact, Mr. Nilsson's version was actually a cover as well. The original artist? Badfinger back in 1970.

Wow. Cool list! I didn't realize that the Mama's and Pappa's weren't the original artists of Dream a Little Dream. Ozzie Nelson turned out to be a huge star. Of Television and did pretty well genetically too. Ricky Nelson was his son and grew up on the 'Ozzie and Harriet' show. He was, of course, black and white until he started singing. How about that?

Thanks for a GREAT post. I love it!

@bigtom13 Thanks! I did my research a little better this time around! Also, I think the Nelsons had a pretty good musical heritage. Ricky Nelson's two twins put together a band in the early 90's just called Nelson that had a couple of hit songs, so music is definitely in their genes!

For a short time in the 80's, it was impossible to live without Nelson's love and affection. You just couldn't face another night on your own. ;)

It's only after the rain that the blue skies that we wait on will come through. haha! :)
