Once upon a time, there lived a family on the coast of Sumatra. The family had a child named Malin Kundang. Because the condition of their family is very apprehensive, then the malin dad decided to go to the country across.

Great hope of malin and his mother, one day his father came home with a lot of money that later can be to buy daily necessities. After months the father of malin never came, and finally the hope of Malin Kundang and his mother.

After Malin Kundang grew up, he thought to earn a living in the country with the hope of later when he returned to his hometown, he has become a rich man. Finally Malin Kundang sailed along with a ship merchant shipwright in his hometown that has been successful.

During his stay in the ship, Malin Kundang learned a lot about the science of cruise on the crew of experienced ships. Malin studied diligently about shipbuilding to his more experienced friends, and he was finally very good at shipping.

Many islands have been visited, until one day in the middle of the journey, suddenly the ship that climbed Malin Kundang in attack by pirates. All merchandise of merchants on board were seized by pirates. In fact most of the crew and the people on board were killed by the pirates. Malin Kundang was fortunate that he was not killed by the pirates, because when it happened, Malin was soon hiding in a small room covered with wood.

Malin Kundang hanging in the middle of the sea, until finally the ship that ditumpanginya stranded on a beach. With the remaining energy, Malin Kundang walks to the nearest village from the beach. Mrs. Malin Kundang, who waits daily for her son, sees the beautiful ship, goes to the harbor. He saw two men standing on the deck of the ship. He believes that who is standing is his son Malin Kundang and his wife.

Malin Kundang got off the boat. He was greeted by his mother. After close enough, her mother saw the wounded in the right arm of the person, the more assured her mother that he approached was Malin Kundang. "Malin Kundang, my son, why did you leave so long without sending word?", He said as he hugged Malin Kundang. But Kundang immediately let go of his mother's embrace and pushed him down. "Women do not know themselves, carelessly claimed to be my mother", said Malin Kundang to his mother. Malin Kundang pretended not to recognize his mother, embarrassed by his elderly mother and dressed in rags. "The woman is your mother?", Asked the wife of Malin Kundang. "No, he's just a beggar who pretends to be my mother to get my treasure," Malin said to his wife. Hearing statements and being treated arbitrarily by his son, Malin Kundang's mother was very angry. He did not expect his son to be a rebellious child. Because of his rising anger, Malin's mother raised her hands saying "Oh God, if she's my son, I swear she's a rock". Not long afterwards the winds rumbled and a violent storm came to destroy the ship Malin Kundang. After that Malin Kundang body slowly become stiff and eventually eventually shaped into a rock.
