Hey Steemit Community, it’s my first post and I want to share my Maltese experience with you! It’s been 4 months I’m living here and…. I love this island.
A little geographical reminder : Malta is this a group of littles Islands situated next to Sicile in the Mediterranean Sea. Only at 2 hours from France, 1 hour from Italie. It’s 30km long and 15km wide.
There is only one airport, situated in the center of the island. But don’t worry, when you come here, there are a lot of taxi drivers at your disposal. My advice: download « taxify », it’s the least expensive taxi service in Malta, or if you have an environmentalist inclination, you can download « Greenr Cabs », they only use electric cars and it’s good for the planet. ;)
The Maltese language is influenced by Italian, Arabic and a little bit of French (bonjour, merci, tire-bouchon), it’s very difficult to understand, but if you are afraid, don’t panic !
Everyone here speaks English, it’s the first language spoken here (when I came, I only spoke French, I know this feeling where you are totally lost).
Malta is a multicultural country, there are a lot of students from all over the world and it’s a really amazing social experience, they are very open to meet new people (many parties are organized to facilitate them): YOU ARE NEVER ALONE.
I'm going to talk about the most important thing to me that I'll name "culinary art", if I may call it so… Sorry but I’m a French woman and gastronomy is my religion.
So, when I came in, I was a little sad. How to survive without French cheese, French baguette and good deli meats? How to react where you find some pineapple flavoured cheese? (British influence commands)
I assure you, it has been difficult, but I adapted myself (except to pineapple cheese).
I discovered Maltese cooking, grilled vegetables, fish and local specialties like rabbit. Plates are cooked with a mediterranean influence, it’s very good.
You will find lots of different restaurants with mainly Italian food, Chinese food… You'll never be out of ideas. And if you are too tired , there is an application « timetoeat » that delivers at home (good plan).
There is a 2nd very important subject: nightlife . In Malta, there’s the place to be : « PACEVILLE », it’s one street with more different bars and clubs, it’s very popular and cheaper, something to have fun until the end of the night.
As far as sightseeing is concerned, you won't run out of ideas! It’s possible to practice diving, snorkeling at the Blue Lagoon or just to sunbathe in lots of creeks.
There are a lot of historical sights that inspired some successful series like Game of Thrones. It’s interesting to walk in the Gozo Island and to admire the impressive cliffs or the silent city Mdina.
Or just to stroll in the streets of Valetta….
I hope, with this article, that you will enjoy discovering this island. And that it makes you want to come visit for your next holiday.
See you :)
Coralie
