Several years ago, I went to a screening of The Verdict with David Mamet giving a Q&A.
Eventually, Mamet went on a bit of a rant. One of my friends mostly shares my libertarian views.
We had a moment when we looked at each other in amazement, "Holy shit! Is David freaking Mamet a libertarian?"
Turns out he is.
It turned out that my favorite actor, Gary Oldman, is also a bit of a libertarian.
Honestly, I rather enjoyed finding out that these people shared some of my views.
This is to say that, even though I somewhat understand why people think that celebrities should "stay in their lane" or generally shut up, I can't really get behind that.
Yeah, when we're talking about Hollywood, we're generally talking about pretty people who got rich way too early in life, they don't know piss and head from their sister's titty about anything, and they're just spouting a bunch of monosyllabic, leftist claptrap.
But, that's most of us.
Your vocation doesn't dictate your right to have and share an opinion.
I play with lights and cameras all day for a living. With do respect to anyone reading this, I've probably spent more time on free speech law and philosophy, and use of force law and philosophy, than most of you. There are definitely people who know more than I do; but, I put the work in.
If I suddenly had a platform like David Mamet or Gary Oldman, I wouldn't suddenly shut up about what I think are important issues.
Yeah, Rachel Zegler is an idiot. Yes, Jane Fonda is an idiot. Yes, every celebrity who has come out in the, "From the river to the sea!" activism is an idiot. Every human being who has said, "From the river to the sea!" as a genuine belief is a fucking idiot.
It's not your celebrity status that makes you an idiot. It's being an idiot that makes you an idiot.
