Everything has been going so well lately for Manchester City but they were struck by a potentially huge blow on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side play Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday evening and the manager had suggested in his pre-match press conference that Benjamin Mendy might be available to train on Monday.
But Mendy’s prognosis appears to have taken a sharp turn for the worst.
The French full-back injured his knee in Saturday’s win over Crystal Palace and was forced to come out in the first half.
His injury was not thought to be too serious but he will now travel to see a specialist in Barcelona, with the club concerned about the extent of the problem.
Mendy will see Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, who is a close friend of Guardiola’s.
Cugat will be familiar to Manchester City fans, having treated the likes of Vincent Kompany, Kevin de Bruyne and İlkay Gündoğan in the past.
Given Mendy’s great early-season form, City fans will hope that this is all just precautionary.
