Hello everyone, today I'm going to show you a slightly obscure manga I believe you should read. This older manga may not have received that much attention in this current time period, however it is unlike any other I have read.
Galaxy Express 999
Author: Leiji Matsumoto
In Galaxy Express 999, technology has evolved to the point that humans can transfer their mind and emotions into mechanical bodies which gives them immortality. This technology is expensive however, and not everyone on Earth can afford it. The story follows a boy named Tetsuro Hoshino who is on a journey on a train that travels throughout the solar system to the Andromeda Galaxy where he believes he can get a free mechanical body. He is accompanied by a mysterious woman named Matel who looks exactly like the boy's deceased mother. His mother was murdered "human hunters," mechanical humans who hunt humans who are still in their biological body. Her dying wish was for Tetsuro to get the mechanical body that he always wanted. Though the journey you can see Tetsuro maturing and wondering if he really wants to abandon his humanity for a body of metal. You also see the real reason Matel is accompanying and helping Tetsuro.
This manga explores the theme of humanity in a way that I have never seen before. Even though it is set in a sci-fi future, the underlying message of what it means to be human can be relevantly seen.
