Metal detector in the Subway? Dumb idea or what?

I'm not even wearing shoes right now, sitting in my house... but even at this moment I currently have metal zippers, a metal wallet, keys, a small pocket knife, and a metal pen on me.

If I were actually leaving my house for the day, I'd have my phone, a computer/tablet, at least one other metal pen, possibly a metal pencil, maybe an altoids / mint tin, a couple hard drives, a full complement of data cables, and some other items I'm already not allowed to have in NYC.

I might be a little more laden than some other folks are, but I'm sure I'm not that far out of the norm.

So what do we do? Do we need to take all the stuff out of multiple pockets from our clothes, briefcases, bags, and backpacks, and put it all in a tray and then pick it up on the other side?

Or does the metal detector just go off for every person who walks through and cops have to basically just frisk us looking for guns and such?

Now multiply that by 1.5 million people per day, and you get a sense of how utterly stupid this is.
