Growing a beard is often seen as a sign of masculinity and strength. It accentuates the jawline and creates an overall rugged but mature look. In the past, men grew beards to keep them warm and provide protection for their faces. Ancient men also saw shaving of beards as a big disgrace. These days, beards are seen as something cool and worn by athletes and artists to create a unique style. However, no matter how much they try, some men do not grow beards leaving them out of the trend.
Not being able to grow a beard gives you a baby look, which a lot of men do not quite find appealing, even though some do not care. It is a medical condition because growth of a beard is attributed to testosterone levels of a man. The chemical that spurs the growth of beards is known as dihydrotestosterone which is formed from testosterone, the male sexual development hormone. Generally, men have almost same level of testosterone but men who grow thick beards respond to the hormone more sensitively than those who do not. This all boils down to genetics, meaning that the ability to grow a beards is traced to the parents genes and has nothing to do with masculinity. It is however not a medical issue and should not get anyone worked up.
Some people try to seek help special treatments which might have so many down sides including likelihood of developing a liver problem or of becoming bald. It’s funny but a lot of men who have thick beards have a likelihood to become bald as dihydrotestosterone is also is also responsible for baldness. This should be a source of consolation to the baby faced men with no facial hairs, as they are not likely to get bald easily. Even though men who have beards are generally perceived as being more attractive, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not having them. As a matter of fact, some women appreciate men who do not have beards at all.
In some special cases, skin problems might be the reason some men can’t grow beards. Alopecia is a skin condition that can cause hair loss and baldness. People suffering from this disease have an immune system that attacks the hair follicles unintentionally, causing minimal hair growth. Fortunately, this skin problem can be treated bu seeing a dermatologist. Other sicknesses that can lead to hair loss are anaemia or an under-active thyroid.
Just like everything else, facial hair growth might be affected by lifestyle. So it is best to eat healthy, drink lots of water, sleep better, cut down alcohol intake and smoking habits. We should do these whether or not we are trying to grow facial hairs anyway. However, the fact is, genetics play the most role in facial hair growth. So if you are from a family of clean no-hair cheeks, chances are you’re not likely to grow a beard but you still stand a chance if you are in your early 20s. You never know what the future holds, your facial hair growth might just kick in. Nevertheless, no need to worry so much, nature does what it wants, and sometimes we have no control over what our body features will look like.
