The four-days long showpiece event was inaugurated by Governor La Ganesan in the presence of Chief Minister – N. Biren Singh. It may be noted that the event is taking place after a gap of two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Apart from Shirui village, the cultural extravaganza will also be held at Bakshi Ground in Dungrei where musical bands from across the country will take part in a singing competition titled 'Shirock'.
Manipur Shirui Lily Festival 2022 event is hosted by the Directorate of Tourism and it has emerged as a platform that encourages harmony and unity amongst the people of the hills and valley. N. Biren Singh said that the visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of the scenic beauty of Shirui village, try local cuisines, and purchase local products such as Longpi ceramics, fruits, and chilies, among others during this event.
The Manipur CM added that the festival also throws light on the adoption of unique Tangkhul dog breed and promotes the rearing of Mithun, which happens to be of great significance for the inhabitants of Ukhrul. He applauded the initiative undertaken by Tangkhul leaders, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and chiefs for backing the state government's campaign on the 'War On Drugs'. They had earlier imposed a ban on the poppy cultivation in all Tangkhul-inhabited areas of the state.
The festival celebrates the vast biodiversity and rich cultural heritage of Manipur and enlightens the travellers about the Tangkhul Naga tribe of Ukhrul and allows them to explore the state's highest hill station through its cultural origins, values, and customs.
