What is the meaning of Genesis 5:1, When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God?

Genesis, the first book of the Bible tells us about the creation of man: "When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God", Genesis 5:1.
In the Bible God is spirit: "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.", Genesis 1:2; "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?", Psalm 139:7; "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom", 2 Corinthians 3:17.
Even though God created man out of clay: "Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being", Genesis 2:7. When the Bible speaks to us of the likeness to God, this likeness can only be given in the grace of the spirit, his eternal wisdom. The spirit is a gift, a charism, that God grants us to live according to his will, the spirit is that inner teacher by which we recognize God in our heart, like the good samaritan who helps his neighbor by seeing him in need (Luke 10:25-37). Only through the spirit do we recognize the true law of God, the golden rule, our neigbor matters: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, Matthew 7:12.
God gives us his spirit as a gift, so that men can carry out a very defined mission, increase the gifts, increase the perfection and order of creation as in the Parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30). The spirit is also what allows us to understand the immaterial realities: "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal", 2 Corinthians 4:18.

Ultimately, the spirit is not a rational virtue, but a disposition of the heart to understand the supernatural nature of man.
