The origin of "4:20"

There is nothing definitive about the term "4:20" (cannabis culture), many of the outstanding stories from which the term originated. There are those who argue that 4:20 is an American police code to call "the ongoing activity of smoking marijuana". Another story that "4:20" is where it was already late afternoon when the position of the sun is fit to enjoy cigarette smoking accompanied by a beautiful afternoon sky. Others also believe the term originated in the Netherlands at exactly 4:20 pm when it was appropriate to drink tea while smoking cannabis.

According to the widely believed story "4:20" comes from San Rafael, California. It is said that around 1971 there were five friends who attended San Rafael High School, California they were Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich who later named The Waldos (wall outside the school) association because they usually hung out in outside school walls. The Waldos also usually gather at the Louis Pasteur monument located near their school at 4:20 pm, after reminding each other when they meet at school. At first they say "4:20 -Louis" but eventually they just call "4:20". Another version that "4:20" was triggered by the young gang of The Bebes who also came from San Rafael, they claimed that their group that first mentioned the term The Waldos only helped spread the word.

The term "4:20" eventually spread and became the code for smoking marijuana. The number "4:20" became a favorite of potheads and stoners around the world and was aided by The Greateful Dead band who also befriended The Waldos. The Greateful Dead along with their world tour concert finally spread the code "4:20" to show the time to smoke marijuana.
