This was the virtually inevitable outcome, because state law doesn't give the judge discretion in a murder-for-hire case.

It has to be at least life without parole. The state could have sought the death penalty, but chose not to.

Non-lawyers have asked me what difference the extra 60 years means. Will they keep the corpse in prison for another 60 years? The answer is the corpse will presumably be buried. But the 60 years matters, at least in theory, because Charlie will have to serve it if he gets a pardon, commutation, or parole on the life sentence.

As a practical matter, this is highly unlikely, because no Florida governor is going to see any political or other benefit in giving him a pardon or commutation, and Charlie isn't eligible for parole. But, in principle, that's why the 60 years could potentially matter.
