Today is the 6th anniversary of Dan’s murder. Both of the hired guns who killed him have been convicted. But the authorities still haven’t charged the people who likely hired them: the mother and brother of Dan’s ex-wife Wendi Adelson. Investigators believe they had Dan killed so Wendi would get sole custody of their two boys.
The reason for the delay seems to be that the prosecution is waiting to convict Katie Magbanua the go-between who connected the killers with the Adelsons. Upon conviction, they hope she will turn on the Adelsons in exchange for a lower sentence. Magbanua is a former girlfriend of both Charlie Adelson and one of the killers, and the main (perhaps only) link between them. The jury deadlocked 10-2 when Magbanua was tried last year (10 in favor of conviction). She is now in pretrial detention waiting for a new trial that may not happen until after the Covid crisis is over.
I am not a fan of keeping people in pretrial detention for so long. And there are other tragedies associated with the case, as well. Among other things, Wendi refuses to let Dan's parents see their two grandsons, despite repeated pleas from Dan's friends and relatives for her to relent.
And it is unlikely that anyone connected to the case will have closure unless and until there is a real attempt to charge the Adelsons and bring them to trial. Though, I do understand the prosecution's desire to wait till they have the strongest possible case. There is already extensive circumstantial evidence against the Adelsons, but arguably no "smoking gun" without Magbanua's testimony (perhaps a bad analogy, since I think they DO have the weapon with which the murder was perpetrated; but the gun does not qualify as a connection between the killers and the Adelsons).
