Al Hoceima (in Berber: ⵜⴰⵖⵣⵓⵜ Taghzut, in Arabic: الحسيمة) called in the Rifain language Taghzout3,4, or Tijdit5,6 is a city located on the north coast of Morocco (Mediterranean Sea), in the center of the Rif region, separating the Western Rif (Tanger Tetouan Achaouen) from the Eastern Rif (Driouch Nador Berkane), to which it is culturally and historically attached, in the heart of the bay of the same name. The city is located 140 km from Nador, 160 km from Melilla, 220 km from Berkane (other major cities in the East Rifaines), and 320 km from Tangier and 280 km from Ceuta and 270 km from Saïdia and of the Algerian border. In 2014, according to the census, it had about 90,000 inhabitants, while its agglomeration, with neighboring towns and villages, is approaching 250,000 inhabitants. The city witnessed an uprising of the Moroccan rebellion led by leader Abdelkrim Al Khattabi before experiencing a Spanish landing in 1925, during the Rif war. Ajdir, which was the capital of the Republic of Rif, is located 10 km south of Al Hoceima. In 2004, the city is hit by a violent earthquake.
