I am African, a Nigerian by nationality and lives in Nigeria. Having come across a sizable number of the female folks, as an extrovert that I am, it is easy for me to strike different conversations with them. I am a very focused and ambitious young man trying to make a good living for myself and I am interested in seeing everyone around me been successful in their various a endeavors.

But I am most times being left broken hearted when I ask my female friends what they picture their future like. The first reply by a large chunk of them to this question is getting married. These has got me into deep thinking and I have come to understand why?
The average African girl has been so brought up and influenced by the society with the wrong mentality that marriage is the greatest achievement for them.

And as so, our ladies try all they could to avoid the stigma the society will attach to them if they fail to get married. An African lady is deemed unaccomplished no matter his level of life achievement if she remains unmarried either willingly or unwillingly. For this reason, our ladies when approaching their mid-twenties rush into marriage so as to avoid the stigma and bullying that awaits them when in their late twenties or thirties. In some cases, their very own parents won’t spare them.
And as a result, we have a lot of females feeding off men and making them responsible for almost everything. this also result in to we having increasing rate of domestic violence, because one of the two parties was not really ripe or ready for marriage, so they seldom understand each other. Take it or not, our society not having enough independent females is one of the main causes of abuse of women.

My joy knows no bound when I see our females in top echelon of powers, either within or outside African doing exceedingly well in their various career paths and family life. But I guess the mentality of viewing marriage as the greatest achievement of the female folks has to be abolished. Our society will be better off if we have as much independent and successful females as their male counterparts.

Thanks.
