COMMON SENSE: A LITTLE COMMON SENSE
In general terms, the phrase "Common Sense" is related to what is appropriate, in terms of feeling, thinking, speaking, doing or omitting at certain times and place.
Definition of Common Sense
Philosophically, the concept of "common sense" is interconnected with the "Intelligence of Sense", which has been intuitively developed, relatively normalized and in some cases legislated by "human society", to behave citizens in a manner congruent with any situation of life.
That is, for Philosophy the "common sense" is a complex mixture of intelligence, emotions, objectivity, accepted behaviors, subjectivity, conventions, traditions, norms, laws, experiences, maturity and personal reasoning, which is based on "that" sometimes we call "the should be", as a personal attitude towards society.
However, many philosophers have assigned their peculiar variant to the "Common Sense", found proposals that are debated between:
.- The rational and irrational, such as the truth as offense or harm and lying as education or kindness (lying to someone not to offend or cause harm is to have "Common Sense"?).
.- The "pragmatic" faculty to orient oneself in life, without considering ethics?
.- The cold calculation between the logical and the absurd, no matter the rules of society or the context?
.- The faculty to judge things reasonably and respond accordingly, how acts of Faith?
.- The gift to know how to distinguish everything that surrounds us, only the material or applies also to the mental and spiritual? How to distinguish between good, bad and normal; and between reason, ignorance and "subtleties"?
Sanity? Sageness?
For its part, the "Sanity or Sageness" refers to the ability of humans to act logically and rationally, guided by the "Common Sense" and based on the truth, what is right, honesty and self-control.
That is to say, "Sanity or Sageness" is a capacity developed by humans to act at the social level, based on their logical, normative, prudent and evolutionary reasoning, separating their feelings, emotions and instincts.
Specific Data of the Common Sense
.- In spite of the many definitions that can be endorsed to the phrase "Common Sense", in my opinion it remains a somewhat ambiguous, subjective and complex concept to be pointed out with certainty.
.- Having "Common Sense" does not always mean doing the right thing or acting with the truth, with morals or ethics; but with what is best in a particular context (for example, with "common sense" you can lie to avoid causing an offense or harming another person).
.- Combine "Common Sense" and good sense and Sageness, if it implies doing the right thing and acting with the truth, with morals and ethics; seeking to act in the best possible way in a particular situation to avoid having problems or causing harm to other people.
.- The "Common Sense" tends to be based on "rational acts of faith" that people in society do to agree on that "something".
.- The "Common Sense" involves not complicating a situation; For example, when we face situations that involve dilemmas and we must make a decision, we rely on our experience, wisdom and "Common Sense" to avoid complications.
.- Although the "Common Sense" can help us decide depending on the scenario, time, circumstances and rational logic, more appropriate and convenient according to our wishes, should be, convictions and self-control.
.- In many occasions people ignore their "Common Sense" to decide according to "what they will say", or by prejudices, phobias or fanaticisms.
.- In short, the "Common Sense" protects us from making wrong decisions, from making serious mistakes, from causing problems or conflicts and from harming our neighbor.
