When you practice different moves in a dummy, that will teach you a lot. You will learn where to hit, how you should place your hands, your leg position, footwork. You use a punching bag, you get a feeling of how your punch will impact others.
But the thing is, a punching bag or dummy will not hit you back. While you are fighting, you are fighting with someone who will hit you back. And you might have no idea what he will do as a response. In case you do not know what that person is capable of doing, you might be in trouble without realizing it.
The attacker will not keep their body wide open and let you hit him. He will block your strike and make it hard to penetrate his defense. Even the attacker parry your strike, what would be your next move? How would you penetrate this defense and strike to hit his body?
You need to have an open mind, otherwise, you will be kind of blind in a fight for self-defense. While attacking and defending yourself in a fight, do you get any chance to get in and hit him? What's the attacker's weakness? You can exploit his weakness to strike and hit him.
You can watch this video where it shows how to penetrate the defense to get in and strike the attacker. Of course, the attacker will not make it easy to strike him. It is you who have to find a way to strike him.
