The assassinations were planned and carried out by a rival political group led by U Saw, former Prime Minister of Burma. British had a hand in this assassination plot one way or another; two British officers were also arrested at the time and one of them charged and convicted for supplying an agent of U Saw with arms and munitions enough to equip a small army. U Saw was hanged inside Rangoon's Insein jail on May 8, 1948.
Burma became independent on January 4, 1948July 19 was designated a public holiday and to be known as Martyr's Day in Myanmar.
