Universities are right-wing in effect, structure, and deed but left-wing in word.

This is true.

It reminds me of the irony of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party. Once you institutionalize something, it is no longer revolutionary but becomes conservative - even reactionary - as it consolidates and protects its gains.

And those who capture the positions of power effectively all become grand inquisitors, whose most important job responsibility is stomping out dissent, ostensibly because it threatens all the alleged good brought by the revolution, but primarily to protect their own status and power.

A rare individual not motivated by a desire to dominate occasionally captures a seat at the table, but their decency puts them at a competitive disadvantage at all times.

The downfall of all coordinated behaviour is that means testing for compliant types, no matter how hard you fight against it, becomes a default for new members to the coordinated behaviour.

Part of this is that even contrarians get tired of "newbie bullshit" when they're in charge.
