For today's weed news we go to the great state of Massachusetts.
A team of researchers just found that cannabinoids reduce intestinal inflammation in laboratory mice!
Now they are hoping that this new information can be used to help those suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's and ulcerative colitis.
"There's been a lot of anecdotal evidence about the benefits of medical marijuana, but there hasn't been a lot of science to back it up... For the first time, we have an understanding of how the molecules involved in the process and how endocannabinoids and cannabinoids control inflammation. This gives clinical researchers a new drug target to explore to treat patients who suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases, and perhaps other diseases, as well" said Beth McCormick, the current director of the UMass Center for Microbiome Research.
According to these scientists, inflammation in the intestines is caused by a person's body's immune system attacking the gut lining, and without the presence of endocannabinoids, the attack goes virtually unchecked.
When cannabis is introduced, the missing endocannabinoids are supplemented with cannabinoids from the MMJ which are very similar in the way they function within the body. This could mean that marijuana has the potential to help the body's natural processes bring things back to normal.
"We need to be clear that while this is a plausible explanation for why marijuana users have reported cannabis relieved symptoms of IBD, we have thus far only evaluated this in mice and have not proven this experimentally in humans. We hope, however, that these findings will help us develop new ways to treat bowel diseases in humans" added professor of pharmacy and pharmacology from the University of Bath Randy Mrsny.
Sounds like they may just have found yet another very useful medical application of the world's most beneficial plant.
