I am an international student living in the United States, thankfully. My second home is Towson even though i will go back south Korea after graduation. it is near Baltimore. I experienced culture shock in 2015. that is.. the Baltimore riot or Baltimore protests. At that time I was preparing my graduation project. I forgot something~ .. my major is a computer science, so I decided to analyze Twitter as a graduation project.
First, I created a system which is a Twitter collector(Twitter crawler) using API.
Secondly, I collected tweets including words('Baltimore' or 'Baltimore riot') as seeds.
Third, I analyzed tweets at 5-minute intervals.
Finally, I extracted important words using TF-IDF at 5-minute intervals, and i did comparative analysis based on all information.
This is the system architecture.
We extracted meaningful words.
Profile analysis showed that the general users write more in the total tweets.
So, until now, we realized that general users leaded to an incident in online world.
However, i wanted to see the initial situation of the case.
Thus, I did comparative analysis based on the extracted meaningful words.
At the beginning of the case, it was confirmed that the role of traditional mass media on the online is very influential. This means that mass media can recognize that this incident is an important. Then, the weight of general Twitter users increased.
And this was a regional issue in the beginning, but as time went by, it became a social issue throughout the United States.
I personally thought that mass media was less important in social networks because people's opinions are most active on the Internet.. However, at the beginning of an incident, we can see that the role of mass media is more important, such as agenda setting theory.
