Git gud at arithmetic

in mathematics •  6 years ago  (edited)

I am still preparing for a number of job-tests. At the core of the application process there is usually a numerical test which needs to be performed at high speed. It mainly concerncs basic math so nothing too fancy. A mathematician is not naturally good at performing high-speed mental math so it is nothing that requires a lot of practice (at least for me).

I came across arithmetic-zetamac to practice your speed at basic arithmetic. On the basic settings you just need to solve as many equations as you can in 120 sec. I started at about 20 points. And now, a few weeks later, I am averaging at about 40. Slowly moving to a score of 50. :o)

Yay above 40:

So a lot of successful applicants seem to have a gotten a score of about 60 so I still have a long way to go...

Here is another website for arithmetic practice. It includes a bit more advanced type of computations but nothing which would not be considered in the category of basic. I will probably give it a serious try once I get a more reasonable score on the arithmetic-zetamac game.

I am somewhat boggled that a mathematics PhD is being asked to do arithmetic as part of a hiring process.

I am guessing it probably takes on the role of a stress-test. But I am not sure. Phds over here don't have to take any exams. So generally the phd-course is quite relaxing. In addition, a phd is considered a staff member so you are also ensured of income.

Stress or "efficiency" test, eh? Like I've mentioned in the Rullo comments, Brain Age would have you perform quick computation as exercise, but what I perhaps neglected to mention is that your performance would also determine your "age" score (which is essentially another way to present IQ).
So this is probably a quick and dirty way to determine general mental acuity of the applicant.

Yeah it totally also has to do with IQ. But on the other hand I am pretty sure that even if you have a high IQ you might not be naturally good at this. It requires at least some practice to do this at high speed. So they might also be testing your willingness to do meaningless tasks for the company.

Not applying for post-doctoral positions?

So far I am only looking into one doctoral position at a university in the same city where my girlfriend will work. But it is not clear if they have a suitable position for me. I don't really want to do the several post-docs at different locations which seems to be the standard for finding a permenant position in academia. So I am mostly looking at positions outside academia.

I love this. And I'm terrible at it. But, I figure, it can only help. Not applying for a job...just need practice.

I recently came accross this -> http://neurolympics.nl/ maybe you will like that too. It is not math more of a general iq-excercise stuff. There is also a demo if you just want to get an idea of what it is about.

Thank you...I don't want to have my brain potential assessed. Afraid of what I'll learn :) I love the math program. No judgment. No pass. No fail. Just practice. And I do get better. I have also shared both programs with family.
