Brainsteem Mathematics Challenges - Sums of Squares 2017

in mathematics •  7 years ago

A) If we wish to write the number 2017 as the sum of k distinct square numbers, what is the minimum value of k?

B) If we wish to write the number 2017 as the sum of q squares of prime numbers, not necessarily distinct, what is the minimum value of q?

For example, 26 = 12 + 52, so k=2, but if we restrict ourselves to prime number squares, then 26 = 22 + 22 + 32 + 32, so that q=4.

Have fun!

As always, these questions are adapted from one of the many mathematics competitions around the world, and are designed to be done by hand, without even a calculator! Those questions that are on computational mathematics will be entitled "Brainsteem Compute".

There has been a long gap since my last post on mathematics. I have been managing the Minnows Accelerator Project (MAP) and that has taken most of my time. But I shall also now return to posting on subjects that interest me!

I would like to see more mathematicians and scientists on MAP - to request to join, a link to the Signup page is always available on the @accelerator profile page, and please read the process. Thanks!

Please also consider voting for me as witness. Thank you.

I just love Maths!
You've been doing a great job with MAP, thank you for that. But I personally look forward to seeing more Math posts :)

Thanks, I shall try! It is really a matter of time; it also takes time to come up with new versions of old questions.

Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by rycharde from the Minnow Support Project. It's a witness project run by aggroed, ausbitbank, teamsteem, theprophet0, someguy123, neoxian, followbtcnews/crimsonclad, and netuoso. The goal is to help Steemit grow by supporting Minnows and creating a social network. Please find us in the Peace, Abundance, and Liberty Network (PALnet) Discord Channel. It's a completely public and open space to all members of the Steemit community who voluntarily choose to be there.

good luck comrades, keep working, I pray for your sustenance increases
