"Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will."

O-market tragedy

In 1884 a group of workers in the United States of Chicago started a movement to work for 8 hours a day, and they set the time for effecting their demands until 1886. They are repeatedly demanded by the owners but they do not respond to them. Article published in a magazine At stake, rebellion grew in extreme. And Chicago became the main stage of the protests.

As far as the 1st May was approaching, the conflict between the two parties was becoming predictable. The owner-merchant class declined the offer. Police had already carried out cruel torture on the workers. The preparations are going on again. Traders of police bought special weapons to fire the workers. On May 1st, nearly 300,000 workers in the US came out of the street to work. The movement became paramount.

4 May 1886 Clock is seven in the evening. Snow is blowing with light rain all around. Meanwhile, workers gathered in a commercial area in Hay-Market Square, Chicago, for a procession. They did this by inspiring themselves to the success of a massive labor rally held in Canada in 1872.

A leader named August Spez said something to the workers gathered. Suddenly a bomb exploded near the police party, standing in the distance, in which Mathias J. A police named Dagan was immediately killed and six others were later killed. The police started an attack on the workers suddenly, which took the form of riots or riots. In this riot, 11 workers were martyred.

Hanging on false accusation

Altogether eight people, including August Spiez, have been felicitously convicted of accusing the police of killing the workers on behalf of the police. Among them, 'Oscar Nebe' was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Surprisingly, before being hanged, a person named Lewis Ling, who was imprisoned, committed suicide. The remaining six were hanged on an open spot on 11 November 1887.

Five Shaheed Workers (except Fielden) were buried in the German Waldheim graveyard (now the "Forest Home Cemetery") in the Forest Park of Chicago. In 1893 a memorial was built in memory of them. A hundred years later, the American Interior Ministry declared the monument built by the sculptor Albert Weinart as National Historic Landmark.
