I just finished reading the book reviewed here. This review is fair and accurate and will provide you with an incomplete, but substantial, summary of the book - which I highly recommend.
What is notably missing is McWhorter's sensible recommendations for improving black lives - end the drug war, teach black children to read using phonics (he is a linguistic scholar) and encourage black teens to seek vocational training. Also, crucially, ignore the teachings of the Woke, avoid it assiduously - it is poison for black people and the rest of us. No use trying to engage with them, it is a religion and you are a heretic. Ignore them.
I would add: that to fully engage with the subject matter, one needs a clear understanding of how free market capitalism works automatically and quickly to erode discrimination. I would emphasize that racism and discriminations are different things. The former is an attitude, the latter is about behavior. Policy should focus on the behavior and realize that discriminatory behavior comes at a price in a competitive economy. Those who hire the best person for the job regardless of race, ethnicity, or any other such category, will do better that discriminators who deprive themselves of talent. This is more than theoretical. It works. There is no social system that is less incriminatory than competitive capitalism. If young people could be made to understand the what and why of it that would be pivotal.
Better to recognize and apply one's merit and efficiency than to blindly favor stagnant bigotry.
