Scientists have been looking into the effect that eckies can have on alcohol addiction.

In a revolutionary study doctors in the UK are about to start the world's first clinical MDMA trial with actual alcoholics.

Yes, this is an actual thing.

Speaking at the Breaking Convention conference on psychedelic drugs, lead researcher Dr Ben Sessa said:

"Current alcohol treatment is so poor at the moment, but it is all we have got, so we are looking for new tools to help patients.

We know that MDMA works really well in helping people who have suffered trauma and it helps to build empathy.

Many of my patients who are alcoholics have suffered some sort of trauma in their past and this plays a role in their addiction."

On that note, there's also scientific interest in using the serotonin-inducing drug to treat post-traumatic stress syndrome - But that hasn't officially been approved yet.

The plan for this first study involves twenty alcoholics who will be given eight weekly sessions of psychotherapy. During two of these sessions the patients will receive a dose of MDMA.

Well, alchy friends, Doctors orders, where the pingers at?
