It's been nearly two weeks since I found a tastey gift waiting for me from Joey @koningsbruggen, and after enjoying each flavor for breakfast during this stretch, I feel it's time to report the results.
Let me start by telling you a little bit about what Joylent exactly is. Joylent is a meal replacement shake mix that comes as a dry powder. There are four flavors: Strawberry, Banana, Chocolate, Vanilla. The recommended portion is about 3.5 scoops of mix to 500 ml of water.
The shake comes out a little thick and oaty and the mouth feel is much different than the almost milky Soylent. At first, this was a little unexpected, but almost immediately I fell in love with it. Don't get me wrong, Soylent does a good job giving you a quick boost, but I noticed with Joylent, I felt a lot more satiated afterwards. I could go 5-6 hours without eating after a shake without feeling starving. This was a really nice benefit.
The fact that Joylent comes out a little thick should not be a turnoff, especially with the flavors available. I quickly found that by substituting milk for water, I could make what almost seems like an ice cream shake. I'd scale back the portion of milk, but keep the portion of powder the same. This made an even thicker shake, but turned breakfast into a delicious treat to start your day.
Another Joylent hack I'd employ, particularly with chocolate, was mixing in a little bit of milk and a lot of coffee. This worked well, since it's always nice getting caffeine any way you can in the morning.
Joylent is also great with water and that is actually the way @missjessica prefers it. I personally just loved having the options to mix it up and keep it fresh. So let's look at the flavors a bit.
Strawberry
Ever have a Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Dessert Bar? This tastes very similar. I didn't expect to like this one, as I thought it would be too fruity in the morning alongside a coffee, but this flavor is amazing. I actually made two as desserts this past week, even after having a Joylent in the morning, it's that good.
Banana
I eat banana bread all the time, as it's one of the things that Jess absolutely crushes in the kitchen. The Banana Joylent is very similar. Again, I like how it is not in your face fruity, while still being delicious. I saved Banana for last when I was trying them all, but it is just as good as the rest.
Chocolate
Chocolate was the flavor I was most excited to try. It's not so much a sweet chocolate, as it's much more mellow. It's the perfect flavor to mix with your coffee in the morning and probably the most versatile of the bunch. Chocolate can be mixed with any of the other flavors to give them a little extra variety and it's also Jess's favorite, so looks like I'll be needing to keep some this in the house at all times.
Vanilla
I found Vanilla to be the sweetest, most dessert-like of the bunch. It has an almost vanilla cake batter taste to it. It reminds me of cake batter ice cream. That just so happens to be my favorite type of ice cream, so yeah, this could become a problem in my life, in a good way.
Conclusion
Jess and I loved all four flavors. Chocolate was her favorite, while Strawberry was mine. We are going to be placing an order to load the house up for a bit, while scaling our monthly Soylent order way back to 12. I still like having the option for a super-quick Soylent, but I have now found Joylent to be much better at getting the job done. It has more diversity with its flavors, while providing a more filling and nourishing meal replacement product.
I am so thankful that Joey sent me these to try, as I had never heard of Joylent, and I almost thought it was a joke at first, as the name is so similar to Soylent. Joylent is the real deal and I highly recommend anyone looking at meal replacements to give them a try. They cost about $7 USD per bag, and there are about three meals in a bag. It's very affordable and I'm pretty sure if you try them there will be much enjoylent in your life.
4.5/5 Steem
I still have the Twennybars to review, so stay tuned for that in the future at some point.
