Unlike other countries the U.S. media currently has no industry standards on how to report tragedies, such as suicides and mass shootings. These stories are often sensationalized with lurid attention to detail.
In the case of mass shootings we are given every bit of information about the shooter. Their life story, their motives, their modus operandi. Why? Why do we need all of this information?
The answer is simple, because it sells. The 24-hour, gore-filled coverage of tragedy is profitable for America's press, cable news networks, and social media companies. However, what impact does this coverage really have on society? Science shows that it can be quite negative and lead to more tragedy.
