One Million Indonesian Facebook User Stolen

in media •  7 years ago

Facebook released the number of users experiencing data leakage. Indonesia ranks third in the number of leaked users.
Facebook recently became the international spotlight due to leaked data partially users to third-party companies named Cambridge Analytica.

The personal information of facebook users is then used as a weapon for political purposes, by forming certain opinions on social networks.

The exact number of Facebook users whose data leaked in the case is not known for sure, until later on Wednesday, 4/4/2018, Facebook released information that the number reached the range of 80 million users.
"In total, we think Facebook's 87 million people - mostly in the United States - may have been leaked to Cambridge Analytica," Facebook wrote in its statement.

Indonesia is one of the countries with the biggest leak of Facebook data. According to Facebook, data owned by more than 1 million users of social media in the country has leaked to Cambridge Analytica.

Indonesia sits third in this case, after the United States with a total of 70.6 million users and the Philippines with 1.1 million Facebook users.

Other countries in the list of Facebook user data leak locations include Britain, Mexico, Canada, India, Brazil, Vietnam, and Australia, each of which at least record hundreds of thousands.

Nevertheless, the Facebook says do not know exactly what data leaked to Cambridge Analytica.

The number of users in the graph above is the best assessed estimate to cover the maximum number of affected accounts.
Data access restrictions

Following the data leak, in his description, Facebook also outlines the preventive measures to prevent the recurrence of similar events in the future.

The way used by Facebook in general is to limit the access of Facebook user data through the API (application programming interface) for use in other applications such as Instagram and third parties.

The account search feature by typing a phone number or e-mail address via the Facebook login screen, for example, is now deleted because it is judged to be frequently misused and harmful to user data.

This feature is often used by others who want to enter the user account by pretending to forget the password. As in the case of a user who suddenly got an SMS containing password reset code.

In terms of advertisers, Partner Categories that allow third-party data providers to offer direct targeting on Facebook were deleted last week. Meanwhile, the ability to access data from the API to create Events, Groups, Pages, also Instagram circumcised.

Call history for people contacted by users via the Messenger or Facebook Lite app on Android will be routinely deleted once the age of one year passes. The Facebook server will also only receive data that is required to run this feature only, not the detailed information such as call time.
Finally, on 9 April, Facebook will present a special link at the top of News Feed. Its function is to show users what applications they use and what personal information is accessed by those apps.
