If you are a long time reader of the Daily Mail you'll know the score.
Nothing the DM likes better than a story they can run to reinforce prejudice. Of course, its not exclusively about race - which is I guess their get out. But if you're defence is 'we don't discriminate on race, because we also simultaneously discriminate on class, sexuality and gender'... it's not a great defence.
Our UK media defends the right of certain people to act in certain ways. Our 'betters'.
if you want examples that aren't about royals? Well, the Mail would run a front page story about a BAME guy who got a parking fine while relegating a story about a white Lord Mayor for child sex offenses.
If you read a paper that isn't coded for you, deliberately, because you want to see how your enemy thinks? Its pretty easy to spot the dog whistling. The underlying message.
"These people are not like us, and we should take steps to... remove them"
Sometimes of course there's a misstep... a column likening refugees fleeing warzones to cockroaches. And then there is a need for an ever so tiny course correction. A sacrifice, and then business as usual.
Maybe guys like Piers Morgan are right, and division, class, race, gender war are what Britain really wants, secretly. The DM has the largest female readership of any paper. People happy to think that Meaghan Markle is people are not like us, and we should take steps to... remove them.
But I have never believed that.
Piers Morgan probably is right to some degree and the media in the UK does simply give people what they want. Any disaster of any sort sees viewing figures go through the roof - so what do you get? Wall-to-wall coverage of disasters. Meghan writes a letter to her dad... loads of sales. Oh, the intrigue. Let's do that more.
Harry's spot on when he says the British media's toxic. I can't watch or consume it any more - even the "impartial" BBC has succumbed to the fight for viewers, trashing, arguing, criticising anybody and everybody irrespective of what their opinion is.
But it's not just the mainstream media. Social Media has provided people with a platform to not just share their opinion, but to impose it. And only those that impose it in the strongest possible sense are correct.
We're on a downward spiral. 12 months ago, Covid united us. 1 month later, Covid divided us with arguments about fakes, etc. When lockdown ends, I fear we'll be even more divided than ever.
