[Left vs. Right sided heart failure] Im a nursing student. Lol

in medical •  7 years ago  (edited)

Just a nursing student trying to pass on and retain knowledge.

Before I began this journey to become an RN, I wasn't aware of there being differences in heart failure. In (CHF) Congestive Heart Failure, either the left or the ride side can fail. Causing the other side to overcompensate.

Left side of the Heart:

The left side of the Heart is responsible for bringing blood from the lungs, into the body to circulate. Replenishing the bodies oxygen.

If the left side fails-

It will weaken, causing its pumping compacity to decrease. The result is, fluid backing up in your lungs, making it very difficult to breath.

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Sudden weight gain (due to fluid retention)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Extremity edema (swelling)
  • Heart palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Protruding neck veins

Right side of the Heart:

The right side is responsible for bringing the already circulated blood back to the lungs for re-oxygenation.

If the ride side fails-

It will weaken, causing its pump capacity to decrease. Causing fluid to back up into the body. Making your body swell up.

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Persistent cough
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Protruding neck veins
  • Sudden weight gain

Hey, good post, nice, I like, upvoted :D.

Interesting post @intrepidthinker, it is good to see you back posting especially about medicine. I am not sure if anyone on Steemit already does it or not, but I am sure a lot of people would love to learn more about their bodies from someone who is actually studying in med school and not just re-writing Wikipedia every day haha.

Thank you! Its nice to be back. Ive neglected my account for months. School has been a big eye opener for me. Ive had endless amounts of information thrown at me. Im super interested in the human body, so its not so bad. Haha

Now start using Steemit as a way to help you study! Regurgitate the stuff you learn on here and you'll retain it a million times better.

That's exactly what I need to do! Gonna start pumping out post.

Keep Sharing that knowledge. The medical field is always changing..... its difficult to remain properly informed.

I plan on it. Lol Agreed, its a constantly changing thing.
