Drug Abuse (Tramadol and Codeine)

The rising menace of drugs abuse among young people around the world is very alarming. The range of people who are supposed to be concerned with how to make the world a better place are gradually turning into junkies.


I'm writing this article to educate my readers about the dangerous effects of the overdose of two common opium drugs called Tramadol and Codeine. This two drugs are originally supposed to be pain relievers but it purpose has been changed, it's overdose is now been used to get high by so many young people around world. The abuse of this drugs have very dangerous and life threatening effects on the body especially the brain.

Definition and Uses of Tramadol
Tramadol, is an opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. When taken by mouth in an immediate-release formulation, the onset of pain relief usually occurs within an hour. It is often combined with paracetamol (acetaminophen) as this is known to improve the efficacy of tramadol in relieving pain.

Side Effects of Tramadol
The most common adverse effects of tramadol include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, indigestion, abdominal pain, vertigo, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, headache, pruritus, agitation, anxiety, constipation, diarrhea, hallucination, nausea, tremor, vomiting, diaphoresis and insomnia.

Symptoms of Overdose of Tramadol

  • Change in consciousness
  • decreased awareness or responsiveness
  • difficulty with breathing
  • lack of muscle tone
  • lightheadedness
  • loss of consciousness
  • pinpointed pupils of the eyes
  • severe sleepiness
  • slow or irregular heartbeat
  • unusual tiredness
  • Addiction

Definition and Use of Codeine
Codeine is an opiate used to treat pain, as a cough medicine, and for diarrhea. It is typically used to treat mild to moderate degrees of pain. Greater benefit may occur when combined with paracetamol (acetaminophen) or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Evidence does not support its use for acute cough suppression in children or adults.

Side Effects of Codeine
Common side effects include vomiting, constipation, itchiness, bloating, blurred vision, fainting, weak, fast weak pulse, racing heartbeat, fever, indigestion, lightheadedness, and drowsiness.

Symptoms of Overdose of Codeine

  • Bluish lips or skin
  • chest pain or discomfort
  • constricted, pinpoint, or small pupils (black part of the eye)
  • decreased awareness or responsiveness
  • extreme sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
  • slow or irregular heartbeat
  • Urinary retention
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Addiction

In conclusion, eradication of Drug Abuse should be preached everyday in every corner of the world, because it's gradually killing the youths. This drugs targets the human brain and impacts it negatively which leads to some of the major violent behaviors and various criminal activities in young people today.
