Seventy-four people died of plague in Madagascar.

Madagascar's disaster management agency said 74 people have died of the plague since it began in early September.

The agency said on Tuesday that more than 800 people were infected with the disease, about 600 of whom suffer from severe pneumonia which can be transmitted easily.

A week ago, health authorities recorded 42 deaths and 343 cases of the disease.

For its part, the World Health Organization sent 1.5 million doses of antibiotics to Madagascar.
