The Psalm 5 is a morning meditation on the spiritual love (Agape) and the goodness of God. As a continuation of Psalm 1, the Psalm of the two ways, the Psalm 5 teaches men that the Lord is the wisest being in creation, and God in his eternal wisdom protects the upright and rejects sinners.
And this is so because God, according to the Bible, is necessarily wise, good, and perfect. As the science of metaphysics teaches in the plane of immaterial realities there is no falsehood or evil, evil is simply a deprivation of the good, for example, the theologian Thomas Aquinas, father of the scholastic philosophy, taught that we say evil to a man deprived of virtue.
That is why the Psalm begins with this spiritual teaching:
"In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you
and wait expectantly.
For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
with you, evil people are not welcome.
The arrogant cannot stand
in your presence.
You hate all who do wrong;
you destroy those who tell lies." Psalm 5:3-6.
The book of Psalms, like all the sapiential books, teaches men to seek the best and the most excellent, and to achieve this, men must seek God above all things, as Moses, David, and Solomon did, in other words, all the true goods of man have their foundation in the wisdom of God, and this is the true spiritual message of Psalm 5.
It is for all this that the truly sensible man is the man who fears God in his heart, the closeness to God as the closeness to the holy temple described in the Psalm is the source of true beatitude:
"But I, by your great love,
can come into your house;
in reverence I bow down
toward your holy temple" Psalm 5:7.
Trusting in God is the greatest spiritual good that man can have, Psalm 5 teaches us, but this trust is not simple faith, the gift of trust in God is placed in the knowledge of the laws established by God to reward men by their actions, so the psalm ends:
"Surely, LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield" Psalm 5:12.
