Unlearn to Learn

in memory •  7 years ago  (edited)

I've had this idea that we should "unlearn" to learn better. It came to me because the society is changing so quickly that some of the things we learn including skills and values might not be useful 10 years later. For example, I learned how to use a dictionary (a physical paper-based one), but I don't need to use it anymore. I learned how to read a map (again, a paper-based one), but I don't need to use printed maps anymore. So why not erase them from my memory, and use that space to learn new things like how to use Snapchat?

Some wonderful researchers found that being forgetful isn’t stupid – it helps make smarter decisions. So there you go! We should all learn to unlearn and make better decisions!

Is it possible to erase from one’s memory?

I actually don't know enough about cognitive science to answer the question with fact, but probably.
