Mencuri Raden Saleh, is a film that should not be missed. One of the heist films that is very interesting to watch, maybe this is the only best heist genre film to date, which is owned by Indonesia. At first I was very hesitant to watch, because I got a promo to buy tickets to watch at the cinema, buy 1 get 2 tickets, I really didn't expect too high to watch this film.
How could I not hesitate, I saw the young cast and felt that this film would be the same as Indonesian heist films in general. Because they are often stuck with trailers that are so captivating, but ultimately disappointed. But for the heist film this time NO, it's very different and new in the Indonesian film industry.
For those who don't know about Raden Saleh, he is a well-known painter maestro in Indonesia, his works are very interesting and priceless, especially the painting 'The Capture of Prince Diponegoro' which is a very famous work. He gave this painting to the Netherlands as a gift for his education, then the Dutch gave it back to Indonesia because it is one of the cultural heritages. Finally, now this painting is in the Yogyakarta Presidential Palace Museum.
Well, the director of this film was inspired to make a film that raised the story of the theft of the painting. Tells about young people with different backgrounds, need money for their personal interests, and finally get caught in a theft scheme. At first, Piko (played by Iqbal) as a painter who befriends a collector of counterfeits, Ucup (played by Angga Yunanda), they sell a copy of a painting to a collector of paintings for auction. But unfortunately, they were caught in the tactics of a former President who wanted the Raden Saleh Painting to be kept in his house.
This 2.5-hour film initially made me skeptical of the storyline that was built. Seems so long and boring to watch. But I was wrong, this film is very dense with plot and fun to watch. This film was written by Angga Dwimas Sasongko who has created many quality films. His creations are very rarely disappointing and interesting. Although this film has an easy-to-guess plot, the story that is built is so exciting and no less interesting than the heist genre like money heist.
I like the style of placing the product placement which doesn't seem excessive like Indonesian films. If you are a lover of Indonesian films, surely you will understand what I mean, where I love to put advertisements that are too flashy in movie scenes. I like it when they are insightful about trading app advertisements for crypto transactions, it's still very relatable to selling stolen goods using crypto coins.
Even so, there are still many small holes that make this film not optimal. It's just very minimal and tolerable. Like the scene when they were trapped during the first heist, the story should have been built up more. But overall this film is very good and fresh for Indonesian heist lovers. Enough not to disappoint. Hopefully this film will continue to sail in theaters, because it looks like it will lose to Satan Slave which is still airing in theaters.
For me, this film gets a score of 8/10.
See you the next time hive friends!
