A Lesson From Shark Tank + Why Mene Jewelry Has No Competition

Like many of you, I love watching Shark Tank on CNBC:

The show is a great place to learn about business, investing, and entrepreneurship.

Recently I watched an episode that indirectly highlighted how incredible the business model of Mene is.

In this episode, the business owners are trying to get an investment for their jewelry start up.

Since jewelry is a type of art form, pricing is completely subjective for regular companies such as theirs.

In the pitch to the sharks, the business owners disclose that the pieces that cost $3 to make they are selling for $96... and they AREN’T EVEN PRECIOUS METALS.

It is completely the norm for jewelry companies in the West to sell their jewelry for what I would consider insane markups of hundreds of percentages.

Then there is Mene:

Mene is 24 karat gold and platinum jewelry sold by gram weight x current metal price with a transparent design fee that is much MUCH less than the company featured on Shark Tank.

The most important less here is that Mene really is a jewelry company and should compared to OTHER jewelry companies.

In other words, when you have made the decision to buy jewelry, it should be 24 karat Mene and not a different jewelry company that is trying to squeeze maximum profits out of you for a non resellable cosmetic jewelry piece.

I’ll keep watching Shark Tank, but I won’t be buying any overpriced jewelry from any of the participants.

It’s a fun show and you never know what kind of crazy idea for a business is coming.
