Back in January I asked for volunteers to take part in a study of how homeopathy might help with menopausal symptoms.
I have now seen the 8 of the 12 women who volunteered for their second appointment, so I thought I might share some of the progress so far.
Patient 3
This lovely lady came particularly needing help with her insomnia. Her sleep pattern varied between a broken 6 hours on a good night, and as little as 1-2 hours on a bad night. Two weeks a month this was excacerbated by drenching night sweats.
Her other issue was with her emotions. She was struggling with outbursts of uncontrollable crying, that would come without warning, from the slightest provocation.
Patient 3 had been through a lot in the years preceding her peri-menopause. A relationship breakdown, children flying the nest, and moving countries had all taken their emotional toll.
With this in mind, I prescibed Natrum Mur and Ignatia to help process the traumas she had been through, followed by Sepia, a remedy often used to help balance the hormones in women. She was also given a "Sleep Mix" of homeopathic remedies.
When she returned 5 weeks later, Patient 3 was very happy. The sleep remedies had helped immediately. She was getting off to sleep better, waking just once in the night, and then getting back to sleep quicker.
The night sweats were less intense, but not yet gone.
The emotional outbursts had ceased completely. She was still experiencing ups and downs of emotion, but felt that this was now much closer to the normal range of emotions we all feel.
She felt her health was better in general, having resisted the flu she'd been exposed to, and also reported that her 'restless legs' were much improved too.
On this visit, I prescribed Psorinum and Pulsatilla, remedies that were indicated by the shifts I had seen and the clearer picture of her constitutional remedy that had emerged. She will also be taking Folliculinum 7c, to help regulate her hormones, and she has her "Sleep Mix" for use if her sleep deteriorates again.
Patient 4
This lady could barely sleep at all. She would lie in bed, awake till 5-6am, then sleep fitfully for a few hours at best. This was made worse by night flushes. She was also concerned about temper and irritability, and was finding herself more anxious than normal.
I gave this lady a remedy called Cocculus, which is indicated when sleep patterns seem to have reversed themselves, with wakefulness at night and sleepiness in the day. Alongside this, Sepia was used again, to help with hormone balance and irritability, and a "Calming Mix" was taken during the day to help with the anxiety.
On her return 6 weeks later, Patient 4 reported a huge shift in her sleep. She felt her body clock was gradually normalising, and she felt calmer than before.
On this visit, I repeated the Cocculus for the sleep pattern, and replaced the Sepia with Lachesis. Lachesis is another remedy often used in menopause, but on this occasion it was particularly indicated but the increased insecurity the patient had felt around her relationship. The "Calm Mix" is also continued.
Both these patients have shown progress with the homeopathic remedies they have taken so far, and I hope to see further improvement when I see them again next month.
