Menopause is a condition when women stop menstruating and can no longer get pregnant naturally, marked by the natural end of the menstrual cycle which usually occurs when women enter the age of 45-55 years. A woman can be said to be menopausal if she no longer has menstruation for 12 consecutive months. During this time, LH and FSH levels remain high but estrogen and progesterone levels remain low. This hormonal imbalance prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. As a result, menstruation stops completely and can no longer get pregnant. A woman is said to experience early menopause if it has occurred at the age of still less than 40 years. Early menopause can also be caused by chronic diseases, tumors in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, psychological disorders, and the use of drugs. Not only that, several other diseases such as HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, Turner syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome can also cause premature menopause.
