Know when to Fold'em

I love playing poker. I haven’t had the time or bankroll to be able to play seriously for the past few years and one thing for sure is that it is impossible to win if you NEED the money.

I think the same applies in business, if you are in a hole, your judgement gets clouded and you make sloppy decisions. Over the past 5 years I’ve started, sold and operated a couple of businesses, In all of them I pushed too hard to move faster than the market would take as I knew the size of the hole I was in from the property crash. My approach to business is pretty simple, make small bets, test the market and if it doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to Fold and move on to the next opportunity.

I once had a business partner who was so risk adverse that he wanted to be left out of a test of entry into the UK for our services, when the failed test cost us a couple of hundred euro he laughed and said “I’m glad I didn’t back that horse” . We weren’t partners for too long after that.

The majority of people are content to get to the end of the week, month or year and have enough. My issue is that they underestimate what “enough” actually is and always stop at “enough for now”.

Having to file for Bankruptcy feels like a kick in the teeth for trying but I’m looking forward to the day when the cloudiness and frantic nature of trying to succeed quickly is gone, and I’ll be able to play another hand at the right pace.
