David showed mercy: I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish. 1 Samuel 24:4

We cannot expect good things from people with hard hearts, but we can expect good things from people who fear God in their hearts. The fear of God is the spiritual gift that moves men toward the truth and the wisdom of God.
And the Bible tells us how David, a man filled with the spirit and fearing God, demonstrated this truth to King Saul, David showed mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) by forgiving the life of his king while Saul pursued him to kill him.
The Bible tells us that Saul, after chasing the Philistines, directed his action against David, and it was in the Engedi desert where Saul was surprised in a cave by David, while the King was doing his needs.
Then David heard from his servants: "This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, ´I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish´" 1 Samuel 24:4.
But David did not kill Saul but stealthily cut his cloak as proof of his mercy, David returned a good to an evil. This seems illogical, but it makes a very clear sense, King Saul was an anointed of the Lord. David courageously resumed the figure of his ancestor Abel and rejected in his heart the path of Cain.
And so David fulfilled a teaching from the Book of Proverbs, which teaches us that we must practice righteousness ("Do to no one what you yourself hate" Tobit 4:15) and mercy even with our enemies:
"If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head,
and the LORD will reward you" Proverbs 25:21-22.
And so Samuel recognized that the Lord, the God of Israel, was on David's side:
"You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the LORD delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the LORD reward you well for the way you treated me today. I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands" 1 Samuel 24:18-20.
