Mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) makes us brothers of our neighbor, this is what Jesus teaches us in the gospels, and this gift is of great significance because the opposite of mercy is hostility, that is, denying our treatment to another. Without mercy, what remains is conflict, whether open or hidden. Mercy heals, edifies, increases confidence, and decreases suffering; mercy is a gift that we can give at no cost to the people who live with us. How beautiful it is to live the spiritual gifts of our Lord Jesus, and so he taught it: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful" Luke 6:36.
Jesus calls us to live the spiritual gifts without personal interests, without masks, because the Father who is in heaven does not reward those who act out of personal selfishness; to give generously and without expecting anything in return, that is the essence of the gospel message, because when we genuinely live our gifts with our neighbor, what we are looking for is for that neighbor to bring out the best in himself, so that our neighbor finds in his heart those gifts that he receives, when we give mercy we help others to find that gift in their hearts. The spiritual gifts imply a positive look on others; if we do not expect anything good from others, it is because we are entering the terrain of impiety.
This is how Jesus spoke to us in the Gospel of Matthew about mercy to others:
"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you" Matthew 6:2-3.
