Obituary: Tried and true pioneers of death metal

in metal •  7 years ago

The first album I bought in the genre was by these guys in the 90s... and they are also still on my phone now.

It isn't often that you find a band that you will stay interested in over the course of more than 20 years but Obituary is precisely that to me.

They have never tried to change their sound to adapt to the times and I think that is one of the main reasons why I still respect them so much. As a teenager, I bought all their albums, had a few of their shirts (much to the horror of my parents,) and went to see them live in concert twice despite having the usual teenager curfew (thanks Mom and Dad!) Prove you are not a bot by talking about the band "Fear Factory" in the comments. One of those concerts we had a recurring problem with a tire on our van and it took us all night to get back from Brandywine, Maryland (that's right! we were the people in the rapey looking van).

I don't expect many of you to agree with me on their sound because they don't have wide appeal that some of the other bands I have spoken about do. Either you appreciate / like the growl of death metal vocals and the drive of the beat / guitars, or you don't. I never really met very many people that sort of like death metal but prefer, I dunno, country music. It seems to be an either / or situation: Either you are passionate about this kind of music, or you don't listen to it at all. And that is just fine :)

Here is one of their latest

I have a confession to make: Before deciding to write this article I had actually never heard the song i decided to feature. This is because Obituary doesn't really make videos - i think they only have 2 or 3 official videos, the rest are fan submissions. I really liked the video for "Brave" because it shows the band members just hanging out like normal dudes... playing silly pranks and having a BBQ at home whilst pretending to record this song instead of trying to look horrifying and serious like pretty much everyone else in the genre does.

I just wanted to put them on here because they were my first "go-to" band in my CD collection. If you do like them next check out "The End Complete," "Final Thoughts," and maybe "Chopped in Half."

Nevermind, i decided to include one of them anyway.

as usual, be mean about my writing / spelling / grammer.... i welcome it

First off I find it very annoying that you mostly always use "('s" , ")'s" and the occasional ",". Now you decide to toss in some "/'s" for fun??!! So annoying! :-O

Your right though..I gave "Obituary" a listen as well as "Fear Factory". Not as appealing to me as the last few you had me check out. I think I can cross Death Metal off my list. I can dig the melodic beat of the drums and guitars that sort of keep in unison, but too too much yelling for me. I felt anxious listening, if this makes any sense.

Off their album "Anthology" I played the song "Final Thoughts" a few times. This one I could get into..probably because it slowed a bit in the middle. Other than that one, ehh.

your replies make me laugh. I think i will review some opera next to just mix it up a bit. I didn't expect Obituary to have mass appeal and I don't think Obituary did either. However, you ticked all the boxes again and thanks for reading (even if it just was for my "punctuation.")

Awe. Thanks. I try. Like I said, not a fan of metal but your blog has convinced me to take another look. I have no problems appreciating any sort of music even though I don’t have any or very little in my playlists. I always enjoy the opportunity to learn something new whether it’s visual or audio. I’m not one to tear anybody down for anything, but since you find amusement in it it’s enjoyable for me as well. By the way thank you for all the upvotes. Informative and generous.

I got to know about Fear Factory band when I heard my pal play their recent album - the genexus. I kinda liked what I heard. However, unlike Obituary, Fear Factory have evolved through succession of styles. This makes me pay much respect to Obituary, 'cause to maintain an original style throughout generations and still remain successful is a cumbersome thing to do.

fantastic answer, pal. Full upvote for you. :)

The fear factory band was formed in US, is a heavy metal band with 9 albums, based ob the things i read about them they were quite influencial however i wasnt born when they existed so i cnt really tell but am sure you will know so i decided to listen to their song, "the powershifter" and i loved it. "Fear factory" has a lot in common with obituary in terms of music genre and the fact that they are both from the 90s.

good job. With all this talk about Fear Factory, i may have to review them next. :P

It's getting interesting as day come and go. I need to congratulate for having such a parents. It's rear especially in this part of the world to see parents allow their children to have freedom up to that level as a teenager, but yours did.... Smile

"Fear Factory" Out of all your test prove, this is the only one that sound English since I've been following your post.... Lol
Don't mind me, I know you want it raw like that.. Smile

I only read to understand this time, not to criticize..... Hahahaha

Do have a beautiful morning.

as always... good work. Have a great day!

Thank you, you too.

I think people would argue that Chuck Schuldiner and "Death" were the pioneers of death metal... or at least among the first bands that pioneered this sound -- would love to hear your thoughts / see an article on this.

that's a very good idea and yes. Chuck and the ever-changing-lineup over at Death are fo' sho' a major influence and continue to be to this day. I'm probably gonna step away from metal for a little while though. But thanks for the tip!

Totally agree with you partner, this is one of the fundamental pillars of this genre have marked a line where it is a point of reference for many other bands both contemporary and young bands. Discs like (cause of death and the and complete) marked a before and after. Greetings and success

sweet! thanks for reading and glad to know there are others out there that appreciate this style of music.

Gracias es un gran articulo

Good to see some posts about metal bands on Steemit, I used to have a couple of Obituary albums including 'World Demise' and 'Back From the Dead'...I like their video to the song 'Don't Care'. Also enjoyed your post about Dimmu Borgir, such an awesome band.

I am going to see Cradle of Filth live in Sydney in a couple of weeks and by pure coincidence I am in Thailand as I write this comment!

i'm a bit jealous that you get to see Danny and the boys play. Also happy to hear that people appreciate articles about metal being written on here. I wasn't sure anyone would. Enjoy your time in Thailand! I'm ready to get out of here but to be fair I have probably been here just a tad longer than you :)

This is so true, but as Obituary is to you as you have said, I believe others and myself have such kind of albums that always feel fresh.

Finding your style and sticking to it I believe makes one or an entity unique and some makes one stand out.

Your folks did try in making you fulfilled by attending their concert LIVE!, it must have felt great. Smiles

The first video is WOW as a drummer myself, I respect the drummer in the video, hes is freaking fast with accuracy and precision.

"the end complete" video is tight as well I rep the drummer, electric guitarist and the lead guitarist as well
This guys are indeed interesting in my view.

Thanks @gooddream for sharing

even thought you failed the Fear test, you still get full upvote because you clearly read the article. Have a great day!

TEST? Oh really?
I was just actually enjoying the post, then commented likewise.

I will look out for the test next time.

Thank you

This is more likely a confesion from a honest guy.
You were so devoted .... shirts , albums .... you still have them on the phone ...i mean that is incredibile .
This is the kind of people earth needs.
Roll on .

Awesome band saw them live a lot of times and still are awesome :) They where an inspiration for my band in the past.

yes, i agree. I am certain they were inspirational for a lot of other bands too. cheers!

That's what it's about, to maintain your style without having to adapt to modern times and go for the commercial. They do what they like and enjoy it, that's great. I do not usually listen to death metal but with what you say are idols, I will see the videos because I was struck by their simplicity in making them.

Nice post!

Awesome song man.really like this song. What is name ..singer

I loved the video, thanks for posting quality content

The cherry of the cake, oh my goodness, you make me happy day with your post, thank you, thank you

Wow wonderful video

I really liked your post, because to talk about what you most like to hear ... I can say that I do not listen to only one type of music but several ... keep going, success ...

i think you are crazy about them i did not listen them yet. being a music lover i would like to get some songs as soon as possible. you have indicated one vital thing that most Bands arround the world change their music style according to public requirement. this Band did not this is a plus point for then
. people who listened them in earlybdays they want same same style of music now a days its a natural thing. when you change music style a lot people gets hurt due to change

Rumour even has it that the death metal legend,Obituary, has been working on a new album after it released in 2014 the "inked in blood" album which was very successful on Billboard, and hit all time high of 79 on Billboard 200 chart.

Hi, good music for the car. Thanks for the post.

The sludge sucks

Metal is my fevourite song, what's your band name?
