Garrison Keillor and me, too

in metoo •  7 years ago

The "metoo" movement has been excellent in rooting out and exposing sexual harassment and the horrible and excessive practices of physical abuse and psychologically demeaning behavior directed towards women. There have been many criminally pathological men exposed, and much more work to do. Unfortunately, as most things do, it seems to have taken on excesses in the thirst for justice and righteousness. Recently Garrison Keillor was unceremoniously dumped from MPR based on yet to be disclosed comments from one individual that was the supposed target of a sexually related advance or touching of some sort. It seems like the politically correct momentum of the movement is overriding fairness and reasonable vetting and pushing the majority into rapid and possibly toxic judgement. I think we need to be very careful about destroying careers over incidents that have not had proper review or may involve context and relationship history that is unclear or convoluted. Let's please focus on rooting out the egregious scum, surely there is plenty severe assault from sexual, to economic, to gender, to environmental, to military ... crimes against women, the impoverished classes, the homosexuals, the environment, and the poor nations abound. The quest for justice is a noble spirit. May the process of justice be just as noble and enlightening.

I think the best way to respect women is to stop watching porn, when you do that you will always just see women as sex toys to play with, instead of another person you can share ideas with. Great post.

I agree that men should respect women. You are on point with your assessment. I felt that way from the outset with the metoo movement. It was well intentioned. But I think it is a disservice to lump together cat calls with sexual assault. They are not even remotely the same thing. And now, the same lack of distinction is creeping into broader political discussions.

Ya always respect for women...
