A team of archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History, Mexico, has just discovered a secret tunnel under the Pyramid of the Moon located in the ancient city of Teotihuacán, north of Mexico City.
Being 10 meters underground, the tunnel is long and extends from the Teotihuacán central square called Plaza de la Luna to the pyramid, similar to the tunnel found earlier beneath the Hairy Serpent Shrine.
Unfortunately, researchers still can not enter the tunnel to study it further. Because, the tunnel was found using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method that scan underground conditions when researchers are studying the Plaza de la Luna.
Based on human remains at the site, the Moon Pyramid is most likely used for human sacrifice rituals. However, the archaeologists of this project do not know for sure if the tunnel is also used for the same function.
They suspect that the tunnel under the Pyramid of the Moon reflects the Teotihuacan monument and depicts hell in the beliefs of this 2000-year-old civilization, a civilization that is even older than the Aztecs.
Very cool! I've always been fascinated with pyramids.
