Mariachi at "El Tenampa" Bar in Mexico City

Last weekend we went to Garibaldi Square in Mexico City. This tour is very popular among tourists, and many locals too, because this iconic plaza is full of Mariachis. You can hire your personal Mariachi Group just to sing for you for around $6 USD a song. And as long as you keep paying, they’ll keep singing. If you want to you can take a whole Mariachi home, but you need to pay them by the hour.

In Garibaldi square there’s also the Tequila & Mezcal Museum and yes you can drink inside. With your entrance, a sip of tequila is included but you can ask for a whole tasting or even eat there. But I would recommend more if you left the museum and go to “El Tenampa” a mexican Mariachi themed restauran and bar inside the same square.

El Tenampa

This is the most famous bar around and it’s really good, and definitely it’s not a tourist trap. Maybe is not the cheapest or the best but it has a great atmosphere that satisfies tourists and locals as you can see it on the video.

This place is a three stories high building with at least 3 marichi groups singing in each floor all the time. And I could assure you that they have the best mariachis in the área. They are very cheerful, versatile and with extensive repertoires. They even play cumbers.

The bar

We are a food blog, so we asked for food here with very low expectations, and they surprised us. The food it’s actually good, and you can taste the most common dishes in the mexican cuisine and get a good general idea of what’s our food it’s about.

Tortilla Soup

The mandatory beverages are of course Tequila & Mezcal, I suggest you to drink it straight. Tequila goes with lime and salt and Mezcal with an orange slice and some special chili salt. We asked for some cocktails but they were not really good, but they look a little bit nice.
