At least 52 people have died Tuesday in Mexico because of the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that has shaken the center of the country on Tuesday. Some 42 people have died in the state of Morelos, according to local authorities. Another eight people have died in the State of Mexico, as reported by the governor, Alfredo del Mazo, Milenio Television, and two others have died in Puebla, according to the municipal president. At least 27 buildings have collapsed in Mexico City, according to the country's president, Enrique Peña Nieto. The mayor of the Mexican capital has said that there are several people trapped in buildings in flames.

In the capital, the earthquake has been strongly felt. There have been cuts in the electrical service and in the telephone service. Traffic lights do not work in various parts of the city and it is the citizens who are directing the traffic. Civil Protection officials warn the population that there are gas leaks. "Do not smoke! There are gas leaks!" Shouted the rescuers as they ran through the streets in the northern sector of Rome. The buildings that have collapsed in Mexico City are located in different areas, such as the Condesa, Del Valle, Narvarte, Centro, Coyoacán and Xochimilco colonies, among others. Air operations are suspended at the capital's airport. In the city there have been many panic scenes just two hours after the citizens took to the streets of the country in a simulated commemoration of the violent earthquake of 1985 that devastated the capital and left more than 10,000 dead.
